SYMBOLISM

Fence

The Fence is a symbol in the play representing the relationships that are lost and gained throughtout the play. The Fence pushs people out and keeps people away. Troy pushes his wife and two sons away from him. Troys lack of commitment to the fence parallels to his relationships with his family. The fence appears finished only in the final scenec of the play when Troy dies and the family reunites. The Fence has torn the family apart but also brought them together one more time at the funeral.
